Storytelling Day at The Forks presents the Buffalo Gals
Over 400 students will learn about drumming and sacred teachings from an indigenous perspective. The Buffalo Gals will lead students to sing, dance, share and drum together. Lessons will cover discussions about the importance of drumming in indigenous communities and how they have seen it transform lives.

Beyond 94 Listening Booth
CBC launched a new teaching guide to help educators talk to their students about residential schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 calls to action. The teaching guide will be available for teachers, educators and parents during Storytelling Day. Participate In Your School

Celebrating Culture Days doesn't mean attending these events or organizing high-scale productions. Here are a few ideas for your classroom to get started:

All activities large and small are welcome! We invite all educators in the province of Manitoba to take part in Culture Days. These activities can take place anytime during the week of Culture Days (September 21-27) in your school and community. Once you've decided on your classroom or school's involvement, send a short overview of your event or activity to and you'll be included in the Culture Days Manitoba program. Challenge other schools and teachers to join! Share this information with your school division and your community through newsletters and websites. Celebrate, create and participate school wide learning in the arts!

Why participate in Culture Days?

Teachers: This is your chance for your K-12 arts/performance group to present a performance at The Forks or simply attend the activities at The Forks or at Central Park! Or host your own cultural event with our support!

Recent Manitoba arts curriculum reform in Grades K to 12 reflect global reconceptualizations of arts education. Notions of traditional approaches to arts education have broadened to include a consideration of the complete needs of the child as a lifelong learner of the arts.

The philosophy supporting the new Arts Curriculum Framework of Outcomes (Manitoba Department of Education 2010) asks arts educators to examine the need to consider both integrated and independent models of curriculum organization. The interdisciplinary nature of the arts provides “unique opportunities to understand concepts and processes from other disciplines in new ways.  Linking the content of arts programming to other areas of learning, ensures that the arts do not become isolated from the general body of knowledge in the school curriculum” (p.10- Manitoba Education and Youth 2003). Other recent developments and issues in music education include diversity education, multiculturalism in the arts, exploring social justice issues through art, technology, and Canadian identity in music education. Participation in Culture Days offers a unique opportunity for students and educators in Grades K to 12 to explore various Specific Learning Outcomes(SLO’s) from either the Dance, Visual Arts, Music and/or Drama Framework Documents.

We are now inviting all educators in the province of Manitoba to take part in Culture Days Manitoba.
